How we protect you

We work hard to protect your confidential information and privacy when you do your banking with us online or through our mobile channel. To start, we provide a secure login process and strong encryption to help prevent others from accessing your account information. But that’s just the beginning – there are many steps we take to keep your information safe and secure.

100% Electronic Banking Guarantee

Under our 100% Electronic Banking Guarantee, we promise to reimburse you 100% for any losses to your Personal Banking accounts resulting from unauthorized transactions through Online and Mobile Banking.

To receive reimbursement under this guarantee, there are a few things you need to do, including:

  • Keep your password confidential at all times ⎯ do not share it with anyone
  • Be careful not to store your password with your debit card number
  • If your debit card is lost or stolen, or you believe someone else has learned your password, please advise us within 24 hours Keep in mind that If you do not take these steps, or if you knowingly disclose your password or debit card (and it results in losses to your account), you may not be reimbursed.

Additional Security Measures

There are several ways BMO protects you when you use BMO Online or Mobile Banking. Here are some of the additional security measures we have in place to keep your personal and financial information safe:

  • If your online or mobile banking session is idle for more than 10 minutes, we will automatically log you off
  • We use firewalls to protect your information with us
  • We never send messages asking you to provide us with personal or account information via email (email messages are not encrypted, which means they can be intercepted and read by third parties).
  • If you use BMO's Interac Email Money Transfer, we will redirect you to a secure gateway to complete the transaction

Protecting yourself

When you connect to the Internet, keep in mind that the Internet also connects back to you. That’s why it’s so important to protect yourself and your computer at all times. Here are some tips to remember:

  • Do not step away from your computer when you're logged in to a secure session.
  • Always log off when you have finished banking online.
  • Once you've logged off, delete all traces of your session from your computer's memory by clearing your cache.
  • If you can avoid it, never use a public computer for your online financial transactions.

CHIP Technology

And when you’re conducting a transaction offline – for example if you’re making a purchase or paying for a meal at a restaurant – you can be assured that we remain committed to protecting your information and your accounts.

Thanks to chip technology, BMO debit and credit cards are more secure than ever. The embedded microchip is encrypted, and therefore extremely difficult to counterfeit. Your Personal Identification Number (PIN), which is unique to you and the only way to unlock the chip, provides an extra layer of protection. What’s more, with Chip and PIN technology, your card never leaves your sight.
